Located in Cook County, Winnetka, Illinois is a short trip to Chicago, only 16 miles apart. According to Winnetka Wikipedia page, as of 2010, roughly 12,187 people call this village home.
A high-income area, you won’t find a more opulent part of Illinois. In fact, the village is considered one of the richest parts of the United States.
On average, per household, village residents bring in $207,955 as a medium income. For each family in the area, that’s about $250,000, if not more.
Residents skew middle-aged, with 42.8 years old the median age. Most residents, 36.2 percent, are 19 years or younger. A small portion of 20 to 24-year-olds, just 2.3 percent, live here.
Those in the 25 through 44 age bracket account for 15.2 percent of the population. Older residents 45 to 64 comprise another big chunk of the population, 32.7 percent. Finally, those 65 and older count for 13.5 percent of the village’s residents.
Some of the most renowned architects in history designed churches and homes here. These include names like Solon S. Beman, who created the site that was the First Church of Christ, Scientist back in 1924. David Adler, Howard Van Doren Shaw, Robert McNitt, Robert Seyfarth, John S. Van Bergen, Walter Burley Griffin, and George Washington Maher also conceived the homes and estates that dot the village.
Another unique piece of history? The village was the site of a Martin Luther King, Jr. speech from 1965. If you ever go to Village Green, you’ll see a plaque there in his honor. Open Communities, a nonprofit, also derives inspiration from King.

In the winter, you can enjoy walks through snowy landscapes and maybe even some sledding. Once winter thaws, Skokie Lagoons really comes alive. In the spring and summer, you can partake in wildlife observations, hiking, picnicking, biking, kayaking, and canoeing.
You can also find the Chicago Botanic Garden on the grounds towards the north of the Lagoon. More southernly, you can spend all day riding or hiking trails. Don’t miss the Winnetka Golf Course, either, as it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon perfecting your shot.
Also, we couldn’t mention one of the best parts of this village, especially for pop culture fanatics. Over on Lincoln Avenue, you can spot the house that Kevin McAllister lives in the famous holiday staple Home Alone. Impress your friends and family by taking a picture of the property!
